Flightless Goose, Virtual Book Tour Stop! Author Q&A and Giveaway!

Flip Flop Reviews is part of the Flightless Goose Virtual Book Tour!  I'm so excited to be sharing this book with you today.

Flightless Goose is a short story written by Eric D. Goodman and illustrated by Nataliya A. Goodman.  The story is a sweet tale with many lessons that are told in a way that is easy for young children to grasp and understand.  Gilbert is a goose, who is injured one day and can no longer fly.  As time passes the other geese begin to tease and play tricks on Gilbert simply because he is different.  When colder weather comes along, Gilbert is unable to fly south with the rest of the geese, so he stays behind and works on building up his strength and speed on his feet, and becomes friends with a child who visits the pond.  When the geese return, Gilbert is able to use his fast speed on his feet to save the day when the other geese are in trouble.

This book teaches tolerance, self worth, and friendship and can set the tone for discussions between children and caregivers to touch on these important topics that every child should understand.  My daughters loved this book and I loved that it sparked such great conversations and has such positive messages.

The watercolor illustrations are beautiful.  They capture the emotion of the story perfectly and really set the scene for each page.

You can find out more about this wonderful book at http://www.flightlessgoose.com/.  You can also visit the Flightless Goose Facebook page.

Q&A with Eric D. Goodman

What made you want to start writing children's books?

I've been in love with writing since early elementary school.  I've always loved to write.  I actually write adult fiction and non-fiction too.  I think I was inspired to write Flightless Goose as a childrens' book because the story of a goose who can't fly seemed like an appropriate subject for a story book ... and I was inspired by the childrens' books I was reading to my own children at the time.

Gilbert is a real goose, but are his experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

They're actually based on the goose.  I used to live on a pond, and there really was a goose who was hit by a car and rendered unable to fly.  The other geese played tricks on him, flying from place to place and making the flightless goose swim after.  Then he was left behind when the flock flew south for the winter.  I thought it would make a great story, and offered an opportunity to teach some important lessons.

Flightless Goose has many great messages.  What topics would you like to address in the future with your children's books?

In future childrens' books?  I'm working on a book now that deals with the environment.  And another about compromise and working with people who are different or have a different point of view.  We're also considering a sequel for Flightless Goose.

Is there anything you find challenging with writing?

I think the most challenging part of writing is rewriting.  It's important to always know when you write a book that you're really only writing the first draft.  It's when you go back and rewrite what you have that it begins to take form.  But that's also the hardest part.

Do you have a routine with your writing?

I've found that I work best in long spurts.  Some people say a writer should sit down every day and write a certain number of pages.  For me, that seems forced.  I prefer to write when I'm inspired to write.  Then it comes easily.  But when I'm writing, I tend to live what I'm writing.  I write for 14 hour days and then read books, watch movies or documentaries, or engage in activities that are related to the subject I'm writing about.  But I think I'm more prolific this way, than if I sat for two hours every day and just wrote for two hours.

I see you have many published works, do you have a personal favorite?

You know how when a musician or writer you like comes out with something new, you tend to like it best because it's fresh and new?  I feel that way now about my upcoming novel in stories, Tracks.  Tracks is an adult novel that takes place on a train.  Each chapter is a story of a passenger on the train, but they link together to form a full novel.  The strangers on the train get to know one another and touch each other in meaningful ways.  Tracks comes out later this month, on June 30. You can learn more about it at http://www.tracksnovel.com/, where you can listen to radio readings, read excerpts, see a schedule of events, and even get a copy of the book!

What was your favorite book as a child?  Your favorite children's book now?

As a younger child, I loved Dr. Seuss best.  (Okay, I did as an older child, too.)  When I was old enough to read chapter books, I really liked The Hobbit, and Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer.

If you could travel to any storybook world, what book would it be from?

Wow, there are so may interesting places to consider!  I think it would be fun to travel with Alice through Wonderland, or with Charlie through Wonka's chocolate factory.

ICON Rogue 2 Review

I don't know what it is about the men in my life, but they are all like a kid in candy shop when it comes to new flashlights.  When I saw ICON's flashlights, I knew they would be a hit.

ICON was kind enough to send me the Rogue II.  We received the green, though it is also available in silver and black.  Compact and powerful, it takes two AA batteries (which are included), and while it's shaped more or less like any other flashlight upon first glance, it is pretty much the coolest flash light I have ever had the pleasure of seeing (not that I have really seen a lot of them...I mean, I have, but when the "guys" start talking flashlights and gadgets sometimes I just nod politely as I see their mouths moving but don't really hear what they're saying.  What?  That never happens to you?)

Upon closer inspection, the body is 6.5 inches long, and features an open design all around which not only helps you keep a grip on it, it prevents it from being too hot in your hand on when used on the high setting for a longer period of time.  The Rogue 2 is made of aerospace-grade aluminum, which makes it virtually indestructible, and believe me, with my husband it is put to the test.  We have a running joke that the longer a product lasts in his presence, the better it is...he can break ANYthing.  Despite it's tough exterior, it's incredibly light weight, and designed to ensure a good, no slip, grip.

It has a microprocessor-controlled LED that produces an intensely bright white beam.  You have the option of two modes with this flashlight and can switch between them simply by pushing the button at the tail end.  There is a high, 100 lumen output, and a low 10 lumen output, which allows you to get more use out of the flashlight.  On the low settting, you can get 72 hours of use without replacing the batteries, and with the (crazy bright, rivals the sun) high setting, you can get 3 hours of use.

Inside, The Rogue 2 is o-ring sealed and waterproof (up to one meter in depth for up to a half an hour).  The microprocessor regulates power consumption to optimize use.  The circuit boards are chem-coated to resist shock and counter moisture and dust, and various electronics are nickel plated to ensure reliability.  I don't really understand what all of that means, but it must be good.  :o)

Plus, it comes with a handy lanyard and you are guaranteed a one year warranty!

You can purchase the ICON Rogue 2 (or the Rogue 1, which is similar, but smaller) at THESE great retailers!

My husband loves this flashlight, and it would make an awesome gift for any gadget or flashlight lover.  I'm thinking great additions to Christmas stockings for all of the men in my life this year (yes, I am already thinking about the holidays!).  I mostly see that it works, it's *bright*, it's actually pretty (it is!) while still remaining sleek and masculine enough for the guys, and I love that I don't have to worry about it breaking.  We are definitely Flipping for the ICON Rogue 2!

Giant Microbes Review and Giveaway!

Founded in 2002, our mission here at Giantmicrobes Inc. is to produce unique and interesting gifts for children and adults alike.
Whether your interest is educational, medical, or just plain old entertainment, we're your number one source for all things microbial!

When I first saw Giant Microbes, it was little sperm cell and egg cell plushes with little respective pink and blue bows, and I thought "how cute is this?!"  I immediately had to find out more about them and to see what else they made.  "How cute is this," turned into "how AWESOME is this!?" as I saw more Giant Microbes designs.

Perfect for someone in the medical or teaching professions (what a great classroom tool these could make!), or just your average science enthusiast, Giant Microbes turns something that might be a little bit "gross" in to something fun and educational, not to mention CUTE.  I was sent a Noodle the Brain Cell Vinyl Figure, which is one of their new releases.  I was able to use this fun little guy to talk to my daughters about our brains and Noodle kept them very interested and sparked a lot of questions.

Noodle is adorable.  This cute little guy was inspired by a microscopic image of neurons (commonly known as brain cells).  He comes in a bright orange box with his picture on the front, and inside you will find Noodle (beheaded!  You have to put his head on, haha) as well as a sticker and a fun little pocket sized flip book.  My kids loved this.  I wish they had a series of books to go along with their great line of plushes, vinyl figures, neck ties, and more.

Giant Microbes also sent me a Noodle Neck Tie.  Great for your favorite geek (said in the most affectionate of ways, I think this would perfect for anyone who's full of knowledge and proud of it)!  How perfect would the gift of a coordinating plush or vinyl figure be along with a neck tie for a gift?  They are awesome together!  It would have made an awesome Father's Day gift, or perhaps for a birthday or even the (*gasp* I know, so close and yet so far away) holiday season coming up.  I think a set of these would be perfect for a (current or aspiring) teacher, doctor, paramedic, or anyone who just loves science.  How fun would the bookworm be for a librarian?  Or the black death for a historian?  They're very affordable as well, with prices beginning at $8.95.  I just saw they even have a Noodle with a graduation cap!  How fun for a new graduate?  The heart boxes just make me laugh.

Everything from Giant Microbes is so fun, I love that they have a sense of humor!  You have to check out their website and look at all the little dancing characters they have for some of their products.  Who knew Streptococcus Pyogenes could be so cute?  Though I don't think I'd be inviting him over for dinner anytime soon... :o)
Giant Microbes is offering one lucky reader the chance to pick their favorite original size microbe  (These retail for $8.95)!

Made by Meg, Review and Giveaway!

Sea glass, also known as beach glass, or mermaid tears has enchanted me for as long as I can remember.  I have picked up bits of it at the beach, and marveled at how beautiful and mysterious they appear.  Where did it come from?  How far has it traveled?  What was it before the waves polished it into the beauty that it is now?  As a child my imagination danced to stories of mermaids, treasure, and underwater magic whenever I saw sea glass.

Sea glass can be found on waterfronts all around the world, and began as a common glass object such as a perfume bottle, a window pane, soda bottle, medicine bottle, etc.  Somehow the glass ends up in the ocean and over time, is tumbled and worn by the salty waves of the sea, creating smooth and frosted shards of glass.  Each shard of sea glass is one of a kind, which makes them a unique treasure.

As I am so fascinated by sea glass, I was absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Meg Carter, of Made by Meg for a review and giveaway here at Flip Flop Reviews.  Not only is Meg incredibly talented and a fantastic artist, but she is a genuinely sweet person.  I highly recommend checking out her blog here, where her personality shines through her writing and photography, and she posts a lot of great ideas and inspiration.

I was super excited when the package from Meg arrived at my doorstep.  The first thing I noticed as I took everything out of the box, was that her packaging is simple and elegant, and would be perfect for gift giving.

Meg was kind enough to send me one of her newest designs, a necklace she calls "The Jill," in amber (which as far as I can tell is a rare find as far as sea glass goes).  Each of her designs is named after the first person to purchase that particular design, isn't that neat?  The Jill is a necklace with a keyhole design and features a chain and toggle clasp of plated sterling silver, and the wire used to wrap the glass is sterling silver.  Simply place the shard of sea glass through the circle toggle to wear the necklace.  The weight of the glass will keep your necklace securely around your neck.  My only "complaint" is that I wish the chain were a bit longer, but that is just a personal preference on my part (and if you order and would like a longer chain, just let Meg know, she does take custom orders!).  Keep reading for a giveaway of The Jill in sea foam!

She also included a pair of earrings with sterling silver hooks to match.  It is amazing to me that every shard of sea glass is unique and yet Meg has such an eye that she can pair two shards up to make earrings that match so closely.  I feel like I took a million pictures because none of them were doing this set enough justice.  This jewelry is lovely!

To clean these beauties, you should occasionally use a silver polishing cloth to gently wipe the surface of the sterling silver to ensure it keeps it's shine.  You can also use a mild dish soap and warm water if necessary and gently scrub with a toothbrush.  Did you know that the oils in your skin act as a natural cleanser for silver as well?  You can help keep your jewelry clean, simply by wearing it more often.  Sea glass generally has a whitish frosty look to it, but Meg advises that if you'd prefer a glossy look you can use your fingers to rub a small amount of mineral or baby oil into the surface after cleaning (this will fade with time, but can of course be reapplied).  Meg also advises that wearers of sea glass jewelry take care to remember that sea glass is, of course, glass.  If dropped on a hard surface it can crack, chip, or break.

I think I'm going to drop hints to my husband that I'd love a Made by Meg pendant, I adore the ones with charms, especially the sea horse...I also have a necklace with a star fish that I think a sea glass pendant would love darling added to.  I love how elegant and delicate Made by Meg's sea glass jewelry is, and I love knowing that with sea glass, no one else in the world has the exact same jewelry, and I still can't help but to think back to my childhood when I look upon the sea glass and dream of mermaids, treasure, and the mysteries of the ocean.

I was sent a pair of sea foam earrings with sterling silver hooks, and a Rita necklace in white and sea foam.  The craftsmanship of these pieces is superb.  You can tell that Made by Meg takes great care to create this jewelry, ensuring that it is not only beautiful, but durable.  Each piece of sea glass is one of a kind and yet Made by Meg has an eye for selecting pieces that work well together.  :)  I don't wear a lot of a jewelry as a general rule, but this is something that I will make a point to wear more often.  This set is perfect for summer and I love the soft and pretty pop of color it adds to my wardrobe.

All of the sea glass used at Made by Meg is truly from the sea.  She states that hunting for the glass is actually one of her favorite parts of the job!  She believes that genuine sea glass has a brilliance that man made tumbled glass will never achieve, and we couldn't agree more.

If you like sea glass, or are simply a fan of unique jewelry you *need* to check out Made by Meg.  Her creations include necklaces, earrings, bracelets, pendants, and rings.  Shipping is free (!!!), she is willing to create items made to order (she has even custom created engagement rings!), and her customer service and attention to detail are fantastic.

Meg has graciously offered to give one lucky reader one of her newest necklace designs, "The Jill," in sea foam.  Simply comment here with your entries!

Here are some Summer Beauty tips from Tracy of Jerseylicious as well as Anthony of Jerseylicious!

Tracy
1. Condition: The sun makes your hair dry and dead. So while you’re laying out, put some leave-in conditioner or use a treatment in your hair to prevent damage.

2. A tan is a must have! But no tan is worth ruining your skin. Make sure you throw on sunscreen even if it’s a low number sunscreen like 4! Just don’t put baby oil on!

3. Get yourself a Maxi dress. It can come in handy as a cover up for your bathing suit or could be cute for dinner right from the beach/pool.

4. Summer is great for hats. Either a big floppy hat to block the sun or a cute straw fedora to match your sundress.

5. Make-up is not necessary for the beach. But a bare face isn’t right either. So put on some mascara on top and bottom lashes, it will brighten up your eyes! (Never know when you’ll run into a cutie on the beach!)

Anthony
 1. Add some summer highlights -- doesn't have to be a lot -- just a few to give a sun-kissed glow.

2. Get an antifrizz treatment. Summer humidity can cause a very bad hair day and GK hair or Bioionic Kerasmooth can be life savers.

3. When out in the sun, put 1 pint of lakme sun care treatment in a spray bottle to 2 pints of water, and keep spraying and coming your hair all day. It helps with sun damage.

4. If you're a guy and you're bald out in the sun, wear a sunscreen on your head with a SPF of at least 30.

5. Ponytails are timeless classics.

Summer Party Tips from Frito Lay

Tips from Frito Lay for hosting the perfect summer soiree:

  • Keep Your Cool – When it’s hot outside, the last place you want to be is in a kitchen with the oven blazing! Cool down with appetizers and snacks made from fruits and veggies, like our easy-to-make Garden Lime Dip — a perfect pairing with snacks like Tostitos® Hint of Lime chips!

  • Keep it Simple – A party isn’t a party without chips and dip, but not all chips are created equal. For example, some of Frito-Lay’s most popular snacks, such as Tostitos Scoops! tortilla chips and Lay’s Classic potato chips are made with only three simple ingredients: potatoes or corn, healthier oils and salt - that’s it!  Use your favorite chips as a vehicle to dish up extra nutrition by pairing them with dips made with fruits and vegetables, like our Mango Salsa Chutney.

  • Keep it Fun – Give a traditional potluck a modern twist by asking guests to share their recipes before they arrive. As guests leave the party, provide them with a festive printout of all the recipes so they can recreate the tasty dishes at home.
My tip, is to make sure you have plenty of Lays chips, cut up veggies, and dip mix on hand!  At least, with my family, we go through them quickly at our get togethers.  I'd rather have extra after the party than not enough during.

What is your best Summer entertaining tip?  Is there a must have recipe you'd like to share?  What's your favorite dip/chip combination?  I love bbq chips with ranch dip!

Be sure to check out these new Lay’s® Potato Chips Regional Flavors:

New Lay's® Honey Mustard – available in Northeastern U.S.
Lay's® Creamy Garden Ranch – available in Midwestern U.S.
Lay's® Chipotle Ranch – available in Southwestern U.S.

And don't forget about the new Tostitos Multigrain Scoops!

Mangroomer Review

When I first saw MANGROOMER products, I had a feeling they would be a hit with my husband.  With their sleek, masculine, design, they are the perfect practical gadget for any man.  They're like, the race cars of personal grooming!

Mangroomer was kind enough to send me nearly the entire line of their products to share with you.  My husband has been using them for the past few weeks and I would have to say I was right when I first thought they would be a hit with him.

First up, we received the Professional Do-It-Yourself Electric Back Shaver.  This is such a great concept for those hard to reach areas of the back.  This product features an extendable and adjustable handle that locks in place where you want it to for use, and folds up to remain compact for storage.  The shaver is rechargeable and charges quickly, and once your body gets used to an electric razor as opposed to a manual, the shaving process is quick, and the 1.5 inch wide blade enables an extremely close shave with smooth results.  My husband did complain that it was harder to get a close shave with this the first time he used it, but the body does need to adjust to using electric shavers. Over all this was his favorite product out of the bunch.  It worked well and you can't beat the ease and convenience! Plus, really cuts down on the amount of"honey, can you come help me shave my back!"  ;)  A++ from me!  Time saver, for the win!

The Essential Nose and Ear Hair Trimmer is another great Mangoomer product.  Requiring one AA battery, the Essential Nose and Ear Hair Trimmer can be used wet or dry (though Mangroomer recommends dry is best), and features Mangroomers cutting edge blade design, which enables the close results that Mangroomer prides themselves on, without causing ingrown hairs.  The black areas on the trimmer (and all of Mangroomer's products) help the user to keep a comfortable grip on these products without slipping.  The trimmer cleans easily with water, and it also comes complete with a cap to keep your trimmer protected when not in use.  My husband said this felt a bit "weird" to use, but that it works great.

Here we have theMangroomer Private Body Shaver, for all of those other areas on your body you'd like to keep trim, though the focus for this product is the groin and underarm areas.  Featuring Mangroomer's cutting edge blade design, it's combined trimmer/foil blade cuts both long and short body hairs effortlessly.  You can use this shaver wet or dry, and choose from five length settings to help easily trim and maintain hairs.  Cleaning is simple, just remove the top blade unit and rinse with water.  The Private Body Shaver charges quickly, as do all of Mangroomers products.  You can also purchase replacement blades.  Blades should be replaced about every 6 months for best results.

Mangroomer products are available at Wal Mart, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Walgreens, Drugstore.com, Amazon, and directly from the Mangroomer website.  Sign up to receive special offers here!
